For the past week or so, the children watched in awe as the older grades ran by the Kinder Yard fence in the mornings preparing for the Terry Fox Run. "Why are we not running?" one of the children asked, his lower lip pushed out in a pout. By looking around at the faces of the children as they watched through the fence, it was obvious they too wished they could participate. That's when we decided we would do our very own Terry Fox Run; Kindergarten style!
The day of the run, we talked about the idea of our own run during circle time. After explaining how it would work, we asked the children if they had any questions. There were no questions about the run itself, but each child wanted to tell us that they could run faster than a cheetah, or faster than their brother.
All four Kindergarten classes participated in this special event. Our goal was to work together to run a total of 143 laps around the perimeter of the yard to represent the 143 days Terry Fox Ran his Marathon of Hope. Each time a child ran around the perimeter they got to mark an "X" on the chart.
We started off the event by briefly explaining to the children who Terry Fox was and what he did. To put it into perspective, we explained that he ran 26 km every day which was like running back and forth from the school to the deck 1050 times every single day! That's a lot of times!
After that we took time to do a quick stretch before the run to warm up our muscles. And before we started our run, we did a quick cheer to get everyone excited and pumped!
Stretching our arms way up high while trying to stand on one foot!
And they're off!
Cheering from the sidelines.
Marking his "X" on the chart.
After a while, the children went from running the perimeter to just running in circles. They were having so much fun!
Waiting patiently in line for their chance to mark an "X".
We did it!!
